The Mumbai University has finally declared a schedule for Senate’s graduate constituency elections which is pending for almost two years. However, many have raised a concern as whether it will actually be the final schedule as the elections will be held on September 22, which could clash with the code of conduct ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections.
As per a notification issued by Mumbai University on the graduate constituency election schedule, candidates can submit applications from August 6 to 12. While verification of applications and process of appeal among others will continue till August 26, the final list of candidates will be out on August 28. After that, elections will be held on September 22 and counting will be held on September 24.
But the schedule, according to a few, is just an eyewash. Former Mumbai University Senate member from Yuva Sena, Pradeep Sawant said, “This is a deliberately delayed process. They could have begun the process in June. Now the September 22 schedule is most likely to clash with the code of conduct before the Assembly elections. This indicates that it will eventually be deferred to a date after Assembly elections.”
“It was anyway anticipated that the Senate elections for the graduate constituency will not be held until the Assembly elections are over. And yet, the varsity declared a schedule. It is only to show that they are working for it as many people have started questioning the immense delay.”
The MU Senate elections for the graduate constituency has been pending for close to two years and is mired in controversy. In August last year, the voters’ registration was under scanner after allegations of bogus registrations which led to formation of a committee to conduct an inquiry.
Core committee member from the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS), said, “The MU administration is strategically bringing different works related to Senate elections around other elections. Last time, the process was delayed due to general elections.
Now, the dates are near to the Assembly elections which might lead to another delay. However, MNVS is ready for the MU Senate elections in any circumstance.”
