Mumbai Rains Highlights: IMD sounds alert, city to see intense spell of rain in next 3-4 hours

Maharashtra Mumbai Rains Highlights: As Mumbai gears up for Janmashtami celebrations today (August 16), the city recorded over 200 mm of rainfall within a five-hour window between 11 pm and 5 am, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a red alert in the district for two days. The neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar have been placed under an orange alert until at least August 19, while Raigad district was placed under a red alert on Saturday.

Vikhroli Landslide: Two people were killed and two others injured late Saturday in a landslide that hit Mumbai’s Vikhroli amid heavy rains. The victims have been identified as Shalu Mishra (19) and Suresh Mishra (50). The injured, Aarti Mishra (45) and Ruturaj Mishra (20) are currently admitted to the trauma ward at Rajawadi Hospital. According to preliminary reports, the mishap occurred after soil and stones from a hilly portion slid and fell onto a hutment, affecting four people.

Advisory: The Mumbai Police on Saturday issued an advisory for Mumbaikars, urging them to avoid non-essential travel and exercise caution while venturing out amid heavy rain and severe waterlogging. In a post on X, the police said it is ready to assist residents and also shared emergency contact numbers — 112 and 103.

Two members of a family were killed and two others sustained injuries when soil and stones from a hillock collapsed on their hut at Varsha Nagar in Vikhroli Parksite amid heavy rains in the wee hours of the day.

"We did not receive any notice from the authorities this time. We are sleeping in our home, when suddenly around 2.30 am debris collapsed on one of the houses and a family was trapped," said Chaya Vasant Makwana, who has been residing in the locality for 25 years. — PTI

Mumbai's suburban train services were also affected due to water accumulation on tracks at several locations on the Central and Western Railway lines.
