Mumbai Rains Today LIVE Updates: At least four people died and over 120 evacuated amid heavy rains in Maharashtra in the last 24 hours, the State Disaster Management Department said Tuesday. The SDRF, along with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other rescue teams, carried out evacuations in the affected districts, the department stated in a release.

Weather forecast: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Mumbai will likely witness moderate to heavy rainfall on Tuesday (Sep 16). The Marathwada region, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, is expected to witness heavy showers on the third consecutive day on Tuesday. Apart from that, the weather department has issued a ‘ yellow’ alert for several areas in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region for two days.

Schools shut in Beed: The administration has announced the closure of schools for classes 1 to 7 in Beed district on Tuesday due to heavy rains and flooding, an official said. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reviewed the situation at the state’s disaster management cell. This is the highest level recorded on this date in the past three years.

The daily water needs of Mumbai are met by the seven lakes, including Upper Vaitarna, Tansa, Tulsi, Modak Sagar, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, and Vehar lakes situated in Mumbai, Thane, and Nashik districts.

Records furnished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) showed that on Tuesday, the total stock in these lakes touched 14.30 lakh million litres, accounting for 98.82 per cent of their total capacity.

The rains have boosted the water stock in eleven major irrigation projects in the Marathwada region to 94.36 per cent. The water storage stood at 89.32 per cent on the same day last year.

Water is discharged at the rate of 1.51 lakh cusecs from ten irrigation projects, with the highest discharge of 91,854 cusecs underway from the Vishnupuri dam in Nanded, officials told PTI.

The weather department has issued 'yellow' alert for several areas in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region for September 16 and 17.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning are likely in parts of Buldhana, Amravati, Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Akola, Yavatmal, Washim, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli, it said.

The Regional Meteorological Centre Nagpur said moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm-lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places in Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Bhandara, Akola, Amravati, Washim districts in the next few hours and light rainfall at isolated places in Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Buldhana districts.

Heavy rains lashed parts of Marathwada region in Maharashtra on the second consecutive day on Monday, sending rivers in spate and inundating several areas.

Keshegaon circle in Dharashiv district recorded the highest rainfall of 105 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM on Monday, officials said.

An orange alert has been issued for Beed and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, while a yellow alert has been sounded for Nanded, Latur, Dharashiv, Parbhani, Hingoli, and Jalna for Monday.

Heavy rainfall was recorded in 32 revenue circles across Beed, Latur, Dharashiv, Parbhani, and Hingoli districts.

Even as Mumbai remained on red alert due to heavy rain, train operations on all four lines of Central Railway were heavily disrupted Monday, with delays ranging between 15 and 25 minutes, though no services were cancelled.

The downpour led to waterlogging between Kurla and Matunga, affecting one of the busiest stretches on the suburban network. Railway authorities said timely intervention prevented a complete halt of services.

“The trains are running on all four lines. There is waterlogging, but it didn’t disrupt our service,” said P. D. Patil, Public Relations Officer, Central Railway.

Three of these flights later returned to Pune, said airport director Santosh Dhoke in a press release, adding that the operations returned to normal as the intensity of the rain reduced.
