Mumbai witnessed heavy downpour over the past 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department’s Santacruz observatory recording 122 mm of rainfall and the coastal Colaba observatory recording 148 mm of rain.
Meanwhile, the BMC’s rainfall monitoring system recorded 127 mm of rainfall in the eastern suburbs, 123 mm in the western suburbs and 93 mm in the island city.
For Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert, stating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated pockets across the city. Meanwhile, the weather bureau has issued an orange alert for Thane and Palghar.
The heavy showers have also recharged lake water levels. Data furnished by BMC on Thursday shows that Mumbai’s water stock level in all seven lakes rose to 8.94 per cent.
Even as the city started receiving heavy showers soon after the onset of monsoon on June 25, the water levels in lakes until Tuesday morning remained just below seven per cent. Due to low water levels in lakes, the BMC had announced a 10 per cent water cut for Mumbaikars, starting July 1.
However, Wednesday’s data showed that Mumbai’s water stock level in all seven lakes rose to 7.26 per cent.
