The heavy showers on Friday forced the Shiv Sena to call off its anniversary function. The widespread waterlogging in the city brought some embarrassment for the Sena, which runs the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said, “It would have been inappropriate to hold Shiv Sena’s anniversary celebrations when Mumbai was lashed by heavy rains.”
“Due to incessant rains, we decided to postpone our function for now. We will announce an appropriate date,” Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said.

The party’s Friday evening function was to mark the 49th anniversary of the party’s formation.
Amid reports that the party cadre, usually known to help people during such situations, was busy making preparations for the function supposed to be held at Shanmukhanand Hall in Matunga-Sion area, a suburb prone to waterlogging, Uddhav said, “The Shiv Sainiks were out on the streets helping people.”
The BMC is controlled by the Shiv Sena and the BJP is a smaller ally. Uddhav Thackeray and son Aditya Thackeray had been taking interest in pre-monsoon work of the BMC and had made statements assuring Mumbaikars that there would be no waterlogging this monsoon. Uddhav later said the rainfall was heavy and continuous causing waterlogging.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the BMC disaster control room to take stock of the situation.
