The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) on Monday commissioned a new six-metre-wide South Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Bhandup Station, aimed to improve east-west connectivity and ease congestion on platforms during peak hours.

Located at the southern end of Bhandup station towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), the newly constructed FOB connects all platforms — 1, 2/3, and 4 — with the eastern side of the station. The structure measures 66 metres in length and 6 metres in width, with staircases ranging between 2.5 and 3 metres provided on each platform and the eastern exit. The project, built at a cost of approximately ₹6 crore, is part of MRVC’s broader effort to upgrade commuter infrastructure across Mumbai’s suburban rail network.

According to MRVC officers, the new FOB will enhance the overall passenger experience by streamlining crowd movement and reducing platform congestion. It has been designed keeping in mind accessibility, safety, and future integration with ongoing infrastructure upgrades at Bhandup railway station, which falls on the Central line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network.

The newly opened bridge is set to integrate with a 9.5-metre-wide elevated deck currently under construction on Platform No. 1 and a proposed five-metre-wide skywalk on the eastern side. Once completed, this network will link all existing FOBs within the station to the BMC skywalk at the Kalyan end, creating a continuous elevated pedestrian corridor for safer and faster dispersal of passengers.

The MRVC spokesperson said, “The new FOB at Bhandup Station is an important step toward improving passenger convenience and ensuring smooth, safe, and decongested movement, especially during rush hours. Once integrated with the upcoming elevated deck and skywalk, the facility will significantly enhance station accessibility.”

The project is part of MRVC’s ongoing initiatives to modernise suburban railway infrastructure under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). The corporation has been undertaking similar upgrades across the network to provide commuters with safer, more efficient, and sustainable transit solutions.
