Mumbai: Prisoner escapes to stop wife from remarrying

An FIR was registered at Colaba police station and unit 6 of the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested Zaidi from his Govandi residence on Tuesday when he was trying to convince his wife to not remarry.

A man who spent nearly a year behind bars after his arrest in an attempt to murder case escaped, apparently to prevent his wife from marrying someone else. He was rearrested from his house.

Mid-September, news had reached him that his wife was marrying someone else in October. Enraged, Zaidi, who has 11 cases ranging from extortion to robbery registered against him, escaped from the sessions court on September 22.

A Crime Branch officer said that earlier this month, someone who had come to meet Zaidi in Arthur Road prison informed him that his wife was planning to marry someone else. Zaidi made enquiries and found his wife’s wedding was planned on October 15. “He told us he could not tolerate that his wife was marrying someone else and decided to escape,” the officer said.

He escaped on September 22, when he was taken to the sessions court where one of his cases was on trial. After his case was adjourned till October 6, he told the police escorting him that he wanted to make a separate application to the court. While the officers were waiting for him, he escaped.

Probing the case, police found that Zaidi had married nearly a year-and-a-half ago. Within a few months of marriage, Zaidi was arrested by Shivaji Nagar police for attempting to murder his mother-in-law. “After we realised the motive behind the escape, we knew he would try to meet his wife. A few of our men took position in the vicinity of his residence,” the officer said.

On Tuesday evening, Zaidi came to their Shivaji Nagar residence and asked his wife to not marry again and asked her to accompany him.
