Days after a prison department constable was arrested by the NM Joshi Marg police for allegedly hiding Charas inside his underwear and carrying it inside Arthur Road Central prison, the department on Wednesday declared that they have dismissed the constable from the service. On October 6, the constable identified as Vivek Naik was caught for allegedly trying to supply Charas to a prisoner. The officials revealed that he arrived for duty at around 5pm and when he was examined, they found something hidden inside his underwear. "The checking is a routine mandatory procedure, but this time, the security personnel felt that Naik was hiding something in his undergarment after which the personnel asked for a thorough search but he refused to give permission for it," said an official. The security staff later frisked the officer in front of superiors, following which a plastic pouch containing eight capsules weighing 71 grams of Charas were found. He had cleverly hidden the narcotics substance near his private parts, said officials. Accordingly, Naik was handed over to the NM Joshi Marg police who then arrested him under relevant sections of the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Naik allegedly told the authorities that a man had given him the said items to hand over to a prisoner Rashid, who is lodged in the high security cell 2. The prison department subsequently conducted an inquiry after which an order was issued dismissing him from the service.
