Three days after a woman put up a social media post alleging that she was groped in Goregaon, the Mumbai police Sunday arrested the accused.

He has been identified as Kuldeep Kanojiya, 27, a native of Uttar Pradesh, who worked at a plastic factory in Goregaon. The police scanned nearly 70 CCTV cameras, which helped them track down the accused at the factory where he worked and stayed.

Sandeep Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 11), said, “Our team went through 70-80 cameras from the scene of crime in Goregaon that led us to the factory where the accused worked. He was placed under arrest on Sunday.”

Earlier on Friday, the Mumbai police registered a molestation case against an unidentified accused following a complaint by the woman that she was groped Wednesday night.

The woman posted about her ordeal on social media, in which she said that no one answered the police helpline number, and neither did those present at the spot help after she was molested.

She said she was left standing in the middle of the road, and found herself crying and desperately calling out for help. She said that none of the emergency numbers, neither the general police helpline nor the women’s safety helpline, responded to her repeated calls.

She added that the lack of support deeply distressed her, and she questioned the reliability of safety measures in a city widely regarded as safer than many others in the country.

A senior officer said they are also checking why no one answered the woman’s call at the police control room or the helplines set up especially for women.

“Such a thing should not happen, and we will check why the calls were not answered,” the IPS officer said.
