Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue Collapse Protest Live: As the Opposition parties marched towards the Gateway of India protesting the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue at Rajkot Fort, former CM and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray reminded the government that the people of Maharashtra would never forgive them. The march is currently on despite the police denying a permission for it.

What is the BJP saying on the protests? Reacting to the call for the protest, the BJP has questioned the relevance of an agitation, calling it politically motivated with an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections. State BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said the BJP’s Youth Wing will stage agitations across Maharashtra today near the statues of Shivaji Maharaj to “expose” the Opposition.

Shivaji statue collapse: Fadnavis spreading fake narratives, says Khera

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue in Sindhudurg district has broken the hearts of people in the country who draw inspiration from the legendary warrior king.

Khera accused Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of spreading fake narratives over the incident. “The Mughals did not succeed in breaking Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. But this corrupt government has done what Moghuls could never do,” he said.

Hitting out at Fadnavis for claiming that late prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had shown Shivaji Maharaj in a “poor light” in his book ‘The Discovery of India', Khera said the BJP leader should stop spreading fake narratives. “Fadnavis should answer when he read the book. Nehru had revised his first edition and written to historians in 1936 to send him inputs to make necessary revisions. He was an intellectual giant and had accepted that the first edition was written while he was in jail and had no access to reference material,” Khera said.

Uddhav takes name of Chhatrapati Shivaji but emulates deeds of Aurangzeb, Afzal Khan: CM

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde launched a searing attack at his rival and predecessor Uddhav Thackeray and accused him of doing politics in the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj while emulating the deeds of Aurangzeb and Afzal Khan.

Shinde also slammed the opposition for indulging in politics over the collapse of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Sindhudurg's Malvan area on August 26. It is unfortunate that the opposition is playing politics despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar and he himself apologising for the "painful" incident, Shinde asserted.

"People of Maharashtra have shown him (Thackeray) his place two years ago. You take the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj but deeds are Aurangzebi and Afzal Khani," Shinde said, adding the people of Maharashtra will teach the opposition a lesson.

Don't do politics in the name of Shivaji Maharaj, Jarange tells Mahayuti govt, oppn

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange told the Eknath Shinde-led Mahayuti government and the opposition not to do politics in the name of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and demanded strict punishment against those involved in insulting state and national icons.

Jarange visited the Rajkot Fort in Malvan, where a 35-foot statue of the 17th-century Maratha warrior king, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, collapsed on August 26. The incident caused outrage across the state, with the prime minister apologising for the event.

Jarange said, "There should be no politics over it, both the opposition and the government. The government should conduct a detailed probe into the matter. The contractors should not be spared." He said both the opposition and the Mahayuti government were doing politics in the name of Shivaji.

Why is the Opposition protesting?

The statue of the 17th century Maratha warrior king at Rajkot fort in Malvan tehsil, some 480 kilometres from here, fell on August 26. It was unveiled by PM Modi on December 4, 2023, on the occasion of Navy Day.

This kickstarted a political blame game between the Opposition and ruling sides, with the Maha Vikas Aghadi denouncing the statue collapse and staging protests against the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government.

Shivaji Statue Collapse Protest Live Updates: BJP protest against MVA for 'politicising issue'

While the Opposition MVA marched to Gateway of India against the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue, the BJP on Sunday staged protests across Maharashtra against the MVA for allegedly politicising the incident. Maharashtra BJP president Chandrakant Bawankule, while taking part in a protest here, said PM Modi had apologised to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as well as the legendary warrior-king's followers in connection with the collapse.

"Despite his apology, the MVA is politicising the issue for vote bank politics. The MVA is trying to spread anarchy in the state ahead of the assembly polls," Bawankule said. BJP party workers held protests in Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajianagar and other parts of the state, targeting the MVA.

Shivaji Statue Collapse Protest Live Updates: PM Modi's apology smacked of arrogance, says Uddhav Thackeray

The protest march led by Maha Vikas Aghadi culminated at the Gateway of India and leaders of MVA slammed the Union and state governments for the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue. Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's apology as one "smacking of arrogance" while Sharad Pawar said the episode was an example of corruption.

Addressing a gathering at Gateway of India, where the protest march culminated, Thackeray said, "Did you notice the arrogance in the (Prime Minister Narendra Modi's) apology? It smacked of arrogance. One deputy chief minister was smiling." Asserting that people of Maharashtra will never forgive the insult to the legendary warrior king, Thackeray cited the statue collapse, leakages in the Ram Temple and the new Parliament complex to mock Modi's "guarantees".

"For what was the PM apologising? For the statue he inaugurated eight months ago? For the corruption involved? The MVA cadre must work together to defeat the forces that have insulted Shivaji Maharaj. The collapse of the statue is an insult to the soul of Maharashtra," he asserted.
