The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) at a moderate 105 this morning. The weather is expected to stay clear throughout the day, with temperatures likely to peak at 36°C and drop to a cool 18°C during the night.

Fadnavis in Gadchiroli: Maharashtra will be Naxal-free soon, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday, after spending a day in Gadchiroli, where 11 Maoists, including senior cade Vimla Chandra Sidam alias Tarakka, surrendered in his presence.

GRAP 4 implemented in Mumbai: Amid the worsening air quality in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed GRAP 4 norms in the city. This means that several anti-pollution restrictions have been imposed in areas with an air quality index of over 200. All construction work in places with ‘poor’ AQI has been stopped, and water sprinkling machines are likely to be deployed on the roads.

Boy rescued in time after window grill of balcony gives way

A seven-year-old boy in Kalyan town of Maharashtra had a narrow escape on Thursday evening as the window grill he was playing on broke but a quick response by alert neighbors and the fire department saved him.

Vansh Landge was playing on the grill of the balcony of his second-floor flat when it suddenly gave way and he was left dangling precariously.

His parents were not at home at the time of the incident. His screams drew the attention of neighbors, who rushed to the flat and held onto the grill to prevent it from crashing to the ground.

State reports highest number of waterborne diseases in four years

Waterborne diseases such as gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and jaundice surged in 2024, affecting 3,991 people and claiming 15 lives—the highest in four years, shows data available with the state health department. 

With an average of 11 people falling ill daily, experts blame prolonged rainfall, poor hygiene, and inadequate water monitoring for the rise in waterborne diseases. 

The figures available with the state health department reveal a sharp increase in cases compared to previous years. In 2021, there were 1,622 cases of waterborne diseases, 3,792 in 2022, and 1,293 in 2023. This year, the numbers soared, with 1,474 cases of diarrhea resulting in six deaths, 1,028 cholera cases causing four fatalities, 669 gastroenteritis cases leading to another four deaths, and 820 jaundice cases with one death. PTI

A former sarpanch suffered severe injuries on his legs on Thursday after being allegedly attacked by unidentified persons in Thane district of Maharashtra, police said.

The victim, Kadam Ugada, who was earlier the sarpanch of Ajanup village near Kasara in Shahapur taluka, was attacked and his car was vandalised by the assailants, they said. He is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital at Kalyan.

"Kadam left his house in his car around 10 am for work. But his car suddenly stopped in a village on the way due to some engine fault. Unidentified assailants then came to the spot and attacked his car with stones. They also dragged him out of the vehicle and severely hit him on his legs," an official said. - PTI

Car in which Karad arrived for surrendering was part of Ajit Pawar's convoy, claims Beed MP Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jan 2 (PTI) NCP (SP) MP from Beed Bajrang Sonawane alleged on Thursday that the car in which Walmik Karad arrived for surrendering in an extortion case was earlier part of Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's convoy.

Karad, an aide of state minister and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, surrendered at the Crime Investigation Department office in Pune on December 31, days after he was named in the extortion case related to Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh's brutal murder in Beed district.

The car used by Karad had been spotted in the convoy of Ajit Pawar when he visited Massajog village, claimed Sonawane, talking to a Marathi news channel.

"The person (Karad) who surrendered made a video (before he turned up at the CID office) which went viral. Will the police department inquire where the video was shot? To whom this house belongs and who else was helping him?" asked the Lok Sabha member from Beed. -PTI

Maharashtra government forms SIT to probe Beed sarpanch murder case

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday formed a 10-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder of Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, officials said.

The SIT will be headed by Crime Investigation Department's (CID) Deputy Inspector General Basavraj Teli, said an order issued by the state Home department.

Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog in Kej tehsil of Beed district, was abducted and brutally killed on December 9, allegedly for opposing an extortion bid by some persons who had demanded money from a windmill company.

Engineering student kills parents after differences over his education; bodies found days later

An engineering student in Maharashtra’s Nagpur allegedly killed his parents apparently due to differences with them over his education and career, police said on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old accused, Utkarsh Dhakhole, killed his parents at their residence in Kapil Nagar area of the city on December 26 and the double murder came to light on Wednesday morning after neighbours complained of a foul smell, an official said. Read more.

2024 sees 11% rise in home sales in Mumbai worth Rs 1.6 lakh crore

The year 2024 saw residential sales worth Rs 1.6 lakh crore registered in Mumbai. According to data from the Inspector General of Registration (IGR), 1,41,302 homes were sold during the year, generating Rs 12,161 crore in stamp duty revenue for the Maharashtra government. Compared to 2023, home sales increased by 11 per cent, while the revenue saw a 12 per cent rise.

December alone saw the sale of 12,193 homes, contributing Rs 1,116 crore in stamp duty. Read more.

A petty dispute between the driver of a minister's car and a group of locals triggered violent clashes between two groups in north Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, leading to arson and vandalism, police said on Wednesday.

While the original altercation took place late Tuesday night in Kasaiwada area of Palthi village, incidents of violence were reported till early Wednesday morning though the situation was now under control, a police official said.

There was a heated exchange between a group of locals and the driver of state minister Gulabrao Patil's car in Kasaiwada when the driver honked and asked them to give way, said an official.
