Mumbai Metro Line 3 integrated trial run yet to begin
Delay likely to push back deadline to start Phase 1 operations

An integrated trial run of the underground Metro Line 3 Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Phase 1, which was planned to be conducted between BKC and Aarey, has not yet commenced. Despite previous plans to complete all necessary work by February 15, certain tasks were still outstanding, leading to a delay in initiating the trial run.
With an initial target being mid-February, the trial run was expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The integrated trial run, which must be successfully completed over a minimum of three months, includes obtaining necessary clearances from the Research Design and Standard Organisation (RDSO), Independent Safety Assessment (ISA), and submission of a safety case. According to sources, delaying commencing the trial run might further push back the expected deadline for Phase 1 scheduled for the end of May.
Currently, only two trains are undergoing rake trials. The Aarey carshed depot houses 14 trains with eight coaches each, which will likely be used in the integrated trial run between the depot and BKC. During the trial run, the systems will undergo communication testing.
Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, is the city’s first 33.5 km long underground metro line, set to traverse through some of Mumbai’s most congested areas, passing under high-rises, heritage structures, and other sensitive buildings, including the Mithi river in BKC. The line is expected to commence commercial operations in three phases, with the entire Phase 1 anticipated to be operational by September this year, according to the MMRC.
