Mumbai: Man fleeing with stolen cash held

Sameer Sayyad was fleeing with Rs 50,000 cash that he had stolen from a bank when he was chased down by the police and placed under arrest.

A 43-year-old man with nearly 21 cases registered against him was finally arrested by the MRA Marg police station on Sunday. Sameer Sayyad was fleeing with Rs 50,000 cash that he had stolen from a bank when he was chased down by the police and placed under arrest. During his interrogation, said the police, Sayyad confessed to his involvement in another crime.

The theft of Rs 50,000 took place around 12.40 pm Saturday at the Fort branch of the Central Bank of India where Sayyad was allegedly loitering around looking for his target. He soon saw a customer counting his money.

The police said there were two bundles of cash, and the customer was busy counting one, keeping the other bundle of Rs 50,000 on the counter. Assuming that the customer was not watching it, said the police, Sayyad tried to decamp with the bundle. The customer, however, saw Sayyad and started shouting, said a police officer.

Realising his game was up, Sayyad pushed the bank guards and ran out. At this point, assistant police inspector Sandeep Sawant, attached to the MRA Marg police station, was passing by the area. Realising what had happened, he started chasing Sayyad along with another constable and managed to detain him.

“On interrogation, it turned out that he was a historysheeter with nearly 21 offences ranging from bag snatching to robbery against his name,” said an officer from the MRA Marg police station.
