Amid light showers, water stock in the seven lakes that supply water to the city touched 80 per cent of the total capacity on Saturday. The lake levels are unlikely to witness a major jump in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting weak monsoon spells in the upcoming week.

While the lake levels stood at 80 per cent on Saturday morning, on the same day last year, the water stock in the lakes had reached 89.78 per cent. In 2021, during the same period, lake levels had touched 79 per cent.

According to IMD forecasts, the city as well as its neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad are slated to receive light to moderate showers until Wednesday at least, with the weather bureau issuing no warnings for the districts.

Scientists at IMD have attributed the less intense showers in the upcoming days to the movement of low pressure system towards Uttar Pradesh as well as no strong westerlies blowing past Mumbai.

The data furnished by the weather body showed that in the past 24 hours ending 8.30 am, the Santacruz observatory recorded 4 mm of rain, while the coastal observatory at Colaba received 2 mm of rain. Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) automatic weather system showed that the eastern suburbs received 5.32 mm of rain between Friday and Saturday, followed by the western suburbs which registered 4.10 mm. The island city division received 3.25 mm of showers during the same period.

With the city experiencing a lull in the showers and IMD forecasting weak monsoon spells for August, the civic body has extended its 10 percent water cut in the city, into the month of August. The water cut had been imposed on July 1, after the lake levels dwindled to 10.88 percent by June end, this year.
