Heavy downpour in Mumbai affected suburban train services on Thursday with water-logging reported between the Churchgate-Marine Lines section on the Western line. While commuters complained of delayed train services, the Western Railway (WR) Public Relations Officer Sumit Thakur, however, said that local train services were not affected. The official said that the water-logging was due to coastal road work. “The excavated debris blocked the water outfall which is why the culverts were operating at half capacity. All manholes from the west side of track till Marine drive are overflowing. Site was visited by officials and action is being taken on high priority,” said the official. On the contrary, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a media statement denying that the water-logging was due to the coastal road project. BMC claimed that due to heavy rainfall in South Mumbai along with sea waves, floated items blocked the outfall of storm water drains following which the waterlogging was reported. However, the blocked items were removed which allowed free flow of water thereafter. As per the CR Public Relations Officer Dr Shivraj Manaspure, although no major disruption was reported on the mainline that caters to the traffic between CSMT and Kalayan and beyond Badlapur Tiwala, trains were running with a delay of 30 minutes. While on the harbour line all services were running with punctuality, he said. The mainline was running late following water logging towards the Kalyan-Kasara section. The speed of the train remained affected, explained the official. A total of 1,810 services run everyday on harbour and mainline. Of which 834 services are operated only on the mainline. Fifty per cent of services on mainline were running with delay, informed the official.
