One person died while four others including an eight-year-old girl sustained injuries in a firing in the Chunabhatti area of Mumbai on Sunday afternoon.
The Chunabhatti police have registered a case of murder.
Around 21 bullets are believed to have been fired by the shooters.
The police said two shooters were involved in the attack. Sources said two persons had been detained by the police.
DCP (Zone VI) Hemraj Rajput said, “Around 3.15 pm in the Chunabhatti area, there was an incident of firing in which one person named Sumit alias Pappu Yerunkar got killed and three others were injured.”
Yerunkar had been arrested in 2016 for firing at the office of Arihant builders but was acquitted earlier this year. He was lodged in Kolhapur prison during this period.
He added, “All the injured persons are stable. Accused have been identified and nine teams have been formed to look for the accused persons.”
Those injured include his aides Roshan Lokhande (30) and Aakash Khandagle (31), in addition to passers-by Madam Patil (54) and eight-year-old Trisha Sharma.
Patil sustained a bullet injury to his right thigh, Khandagle sustained a bullet injury to his right hand. Patil sustained injury to his right hip and the eight -year-old sustained injury to her right hand. They were all admitted to the Sion hospital.
A source said that the incident was a fallout of a rivalry between two gangs operating in the eastern suburbs of the city.
The deceased’s brother Swapnil fought BMC elections on a BJP ticket in the past.
