A FIRE broke out on the fourth-floor apartment of a 14-storey building in south Mumbai late Saturday afternoon. No casualties were reported as occupants rushed out of the apartment as soon as the fire broke out. Apart from the apartment where the fire broke out, several apartments on the top floors were damaged.
Fire officials said the fire broke out around 3.28 pm in the bedroom of flat no 401 in the B wing of Tirupati Apartments opposite Mahalaxmi Temple on Bhulabhai Desai Road. Fire chief Prabhat Rahangdale said some children playing in the house along with their mother and maid noticed fire coming out of one of the bedrooms.
The fire brigade sent eight fire engines and five water tenders to the spot. The situation was brought under control within 30 minutes and the fire doused completely at 6.23pm, the fire chief said. The fire brigade rescued 9-10 people, mostly senior citizens.
One person named Anil Yadav suffered breathing problems due to smoke and was treated. Another was taken to Breach Candy hospital. Fire officials said they are probing the cause of fire.
