Four institutes from Mumbai have made it to the top 10 lists in different categories of the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) are the institutes that continue to retain Mumbai’s spot among the country’s top educational institutions.

IIT Bombay has been ranked fourth in the overall category, third in engineering, 10th in management, fourth in research and seventh in the newly added category of innovation.

IIT Bombay director Prof Subhasis Chaudhuri said, “IIT Bombay always strives hard to provide the best possible educational experience to its students and faculty members, and our performance in various ranking exercises like QS and NIRF is a result of that endeavour”.

IIT Bombay was ranked between the third and fourth positions in the overall category of India rankings from 2017 to 2022. In the engineering category, it has ranked third for the fifth consecutive year. After having ranked fifth in the category of management institutes in 2018, this premier technology institute has continued to be ranked between 10th and 11th since 2019.

The NITIE, which is on its way to become an Indian Institute of Management, is consistently seen jumping ahead in the NIRF ranking. It was ranked 12th in 2017, 2020 and 2021 and 14th in 2018 in the management category. After jumping into the list of the top 10 institutes with a ninth rank last year, it is ranked seventh this year.

NITIE director Prof Manoj Tiwari said, “This achievement reflects NITIE’s commitment towards providing exceptional management education and its continuous efforts in improving academic standards and infrastructure. NITIE is constantly taking pioneering steps towards achieving the highest standards in the field of education, research, outreach and placement activities and in governing the institute.”

Formerly known as the University Department of Chemical Technology, the ICT, a premier chemical technology research institute located in Mumbai, stands at the fifth position in the pharmacy category. This is a considerable jump from last year’s rank of seven. The ICT was ranked at the fourth position for four consecutive years, from 2017 to 2020, and at fifth in 2021.

The TIFR ranks 10th in the category of research institutes and has become the second institute from the city to feature in the top ten research institutes, after IIT Bombay, which is ranked fourth.

Mumbai University’s rank, however, has plummeted considerably after an impressive jump witnessed last year. With a rank of 96, the university has barely made it to the top 100 educational institutions in the country. This is a considerable decline from last year, when the university was praised for improving its rank to 81. And after having managed a spot in the list of top 50 universities last year, it has dropped to the 56 rank this year.

In the university category, the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) follows Mumbai University with the 98th rank. This is hardly an improvement from last year’s rank of 99. Over the years, TISS has seen a decline in its NIRF ranking. In the category of top 100 universities, it was ranked 60th in 2022, which was a significant drop from the 37th rank in 2021.
