Mumbai: Diwali gifts for more than 550 cancer patients
“Several of these cancer patients are unable to go home. It is their moment of happiness when they see an actor share Diwali celebrations with them,” said Vandana Gupta (67), founder of V Care Foundation and a survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

On Saturday, more than 550 cancer patients in the city were in for a surprise after bags full of spoons, plates and basic utilities were gifted to them by actors Vicky Kaushal and Shivaji Satam, as the two walked in the hospital to meet the patients and their families ahead of Diwali. Elsewhere in the city, more than 150 cancer patients in Nanavati, Lilavati, Breach Candy and Jaslok hospital received similar gifts.
“Several of these cancer patients are unable to go home. It is their moment of happiness when they see an actor share Diwali celebrations with them,” said Vandana Gupta (67), founder of V Care Foundation and a survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“I had cancer when I was 42 and I saw the shortcomings a patient witnesses during treatment,” Gupta said, adding that she started V Care Foundation soon after to provide emotional support to patients and their families beyond medical treatment. In the past 25 years, the organisation has aided over a lakh patients with nutrition, palliative care, counselling and funding for treatment.
On Saturday, over 20 cancer survivors joined the two actors to celebrate Diwali with patients at the Tata Memorial Centre.
The hospital also plans to celebrate Diwali on November 5 with 600 patients with a cultural festival — a magic and puppet show for paediatric patients and a dance performance and orchestra for adult patients — prepared by a group of NGOs, Saanvi Social Welfare Organisation, Little More, Sajjan India, Aharveda, and Kaviraj Securities.
