A man has been arrested by Nirmal Nagar police for allegedly posing as a doctor, after having done only matriculation. Police said the 46-year-old accused—Rustam Farooq Khan—was practicing as a ‘Unani doctor’ for the past three years, and charging Rs 100 as consultancy fee.
According to the police, Khan was running a clinic at Bazaar Galli in Behram Nagar, Bandra.
“We were informed on October 25 that a man was practicing medicine without any medical qualification or registration,” said an officer.Subsequently, the Nirmal Nagar police along with BMC officials raided his clinic. “As he could not furnish any document that could prove his qualification, we brought him to the police station for further inquiry,” an investigator said.
During investigation, the officials got to know that Rustam’s brother is a qualified doctor with Bachelor’s degree in Unani Medicine and Surgery.
“Khan is a tenth pass out, and he worked at his brother’s clinic,” an officer said. Initially, he did not pose as a doctor, and helped his brother run his clinic. But three years ago, he decided to pose as a Unani doctor and operate from his brother’s clinic. “He worked throughout the day while his elder brother (who is qualified) would go to the clinic at around 8.30pm and attend patients till 12 mid night,” said an officer.
Following the raid, the accused was arrested and the clinic has been seized, the police said. “We have also booked his elder brother in the case, as he was well aware of his brother’s actions,” an investigating officer said.
