Mumbai AQI moves to ‘moderately polluted’ category as southwest monsoon withdraws further

Mumbai’s air quality dipped to the 'moderate' category on Saturday with an AQI of 139, as PM2.5 and PM10 levels continued to rise. Colaba, Bandra East, and Malad recorded the worst pollution levels, while IMD forecast partly cloudy skies and temperatures around 33°C.

The AQI in Mumbai is on a steady rise, as per the detailed analysis of Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 and PM 10 — two of the worst pollutants present in the air. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai was in the ‘moderate’ category on Saturday morning. The Mumbai AQI reading by the Air Quality Early Warning System read 139 at 5:30 am.

The AQI reading is categorised as Good (0-50), Satisfactory (51-100), Moderately Polluted (101-200), Poor (201-300), Very Poor (301-400), and Severe (401-500). Thus, higher the AQI reading, the unhealthier it gets to breathe.

Among the most polluted zones in Mumbai was Colaba (AQI:189), followed by Khedwadi Bandra East (180), Malad Fire Station area (179), Vasai West (AQI:175) Chembur (170), Nandadeep Garden-Bandra Traffic Junction (169), Kalamboli Navi mumbai (164), Bhayandar West (163), Sanpada Navi Mumbai (157), Sion (135), and Kurla (130).

Mumbai weather forecast

The temperature remained higher than that in North India. The daily weather report by the India Meteorological Department stated that the southwest monsoon further withdrew from remaining parts of Gujarat and some parts of Maharashtra on Friday.

While light rain and thundershowers are forecast at isolated places in South Konkan-Goa and South Madhya Maharashtra, rest of Maharashtra is likely to be dry, the IMD said.

The weather forecast for Mumbai read: “Maximum and Minimum temperatures are likely to be around 33°C and and 23°C on Saturday.” Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to see a partly cloudy sky.
