At 135, Mumbai AQI remains in ‘moderate’ category for 3rd consecutive day; Kalamboli records ‘poor’ air quality

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Mumbai remained in the ‘moderate’ category, however, witnessed a drop in its reading from 149 to 135, early Monday, as per the Air Quality Early Warning System at 5:30 am.

The AQI in Mumbai is on a steady rise days after monsoon withdrawal, as per the detailed analysis of Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 and PM 10 — two of the worst pollutants present in the air.

In view of Diwali on October 21, it is anticipated that Mumbai’s air quality would plummet further owing to the bursting of firecrackers and slowing down of wind patterns due to setting in the winter season.

As per the Air Quality Early Warning System, at 201, the AQI was recorded to be in the ‘poor’ category in Kalamboli Navi Mumbai.

The AQI was recorded to be in the ‘moderate’ category in other areas across Mumbai. Among the most polluted zones was Nandadeep Garden-Bandra Traffic Junction (169), Abhinav Nagar Borivali (168), Bapista Garden Mazagaon (168), Fire Station Malad West (167), Vasai West (163), Aarakshna Maidan Andheri (160), Sewri (152), and Sanpada Navi Mumbai (151), according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) dashboard.

This was followed by Chembur (149), Shivaji Nagar (148), Kherwali Bandra East (145), Bhayandar West (143), Kandivali East (141), Byculla (139), BMC Shastri Nagar Worli (139), Colaba (135), WTP Bhandup Complex (131), and Bandra Kurla Complex (126).

The AQI reading is categorised as Good (0-50), Satisfactory (51-100), Moderately Polluted (101-200), Poor (201-300), Very Poor (301-400), and Severe (401-500). Higher the AQI reading, the unhealthier it is to breathe.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to experience mainly clear skies on Monday.

The maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 34 and 23 degrees Celsius, respectively.
