In preparation for the closure, airport authorities had issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) six months ago, informing airlines and other stakeholders about the upcoming maintenance. (File)Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) will temporarily close its runways on October 17, 2024, for its annual post-monsoon maintenance. The work will be carried out from 11 am to 5 pm, during which both cross runways—RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32—will be non-operational.
This closure is a routine affair to ensure airport infrastructure remains safe and efficient. The post-monsoon runway maintenance is an important annual practice that involves repairs and inspections to address any wear and tear caused by heavy monsoon rain. “Mumbai airport is one of the world’s busiest single–runway airports and we have planned the closure to uphold safety and efficiency standards,” said an official from BOM.
In preparation for the closure, airport authorities had issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) six months ago, informing airlines and other stakeholders about the upcoming maintenance. This advance notice allows airlines to adjust schedules and minimise disruption to flight operations.
As per BOM officials, flight schedules have been carefully synchronised with airlines and stakeholders to ensure a smooth execution of the maintenance work.
Though the runways will be closed for a six-hour window, airport authorities are confident the impact on flight operations will be minimal, thanks to the careful planning and coordination with airlines. Passengers traveling on October 17 are advised to check with their airlines for updated schedules to avoid any inconvenience.
