The Mumbai Police Thursday claimed they had prevented a dacoity that a group of six were planning to execute. The police said that five of the six accused, armed with weapons and sharp objects, were on their way to rob a jewellery store in south Mumbai. According to police officers, the patrolling unit, attached with the Agripada police, noticed a Wagon R with its boot open, around the store in the wee hours of July 18. “We saw four men roaming suspiciously around a shop. They had come in two cars, and on seeing us, fled from the spot in their second car. We sensed something was amiss, after which we seized the vehicle,” an officer said. A day later, when they checked with the RTO, the police learned that the Wagon R had been stolen by the accused from Pimpri-Chinchwad area. A case had been registered with the local police there. The investigators then started searching for the suspects, who were present at the spot. “We zeroed in on them through CCTV cameras and call data records, following which we laid a trap and got hold of five of them from Jogeshwari area,” an investigator said. The five of the six accused were identified as Shafiq Ansari (55), Abu Bakr Khan (32), Zuber Karim Shaikh (39), Badre Shaikh (30) and Rabbani Musa Khan. The police said they are trying to locate the sixth accomplice, Sadam Shaikh. The accused were produced in court and have been remanded in police custody.
