Politicians from the region are up in arms against the move to set up the proposed National Law School at Vasai or Aurangabad instead of Nagpur.
Politicians from the region are up in arms against the move to set up the proposed National Law School at Vasai or Aurangabad instead of Nagpur.
While city MP Vilas Muttemwar raised the issue in Parliament on Thursday and sought an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,BJP MLA Devendra Fadnavis took up the issue with state Higher and Technical Education Minister Rajesh Tope. Both the leaders have pointed out that President Pratibha Patil had suggested setting up the institute in Nagpur at a function organised here by the High Court Bar Association in February. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had also spoken favourably about the idea on the occasion.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had also announced in his budget speech that the institute would be set up in Nagpur. But recently, during his visit to the city,Minister of State for Education D P Sawant said the school would be set up either at Vasai or Aurangabad. Later,Chief Minister Chavan also said during his Aurangabad visit that the institute would be set up at Aurangabad.
This was seen by local politicians as injustice to Vidarbha and Nagpur that has a high court bench. Fadnavis said Tope had agreed to propose to the Centre that the institute be set up in Nagpur.
Muttemwar said in Parliament that Vidarbha and Nagpur have very few prestigious institutions and that the law school shouldnt be taken away from the states second capital. He said the people of Vidarbha were extremely agitated over the matter. Addressing mediapersons here on Friday,Muttemwar said he had written letters to both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister expressing anguish over the injustice to Vidarbha and requesting setting up of the institute in Nagpur.
