While the onset of monsoon is yet to be declared, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said Mumbai may receive monsoon showers between June 18 and 21.
Currently, monsoon-like conditions have reached Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri and further advancement of monsoon in the state would take place during the three-day period.
However, the city has been experiencing sporadic spells of light and moderate rain since June 11. The IMD, in its five-day forecast till June 17, has also highlighted the possibility of light and moderate rains in Mumbai.
IMD officials said the ongoing rainfall are pre-monsoon showers resulting from Cyclone Biparjoy.
“There has been a delay in monsoon, due to the cyclone in the Arabian Sea, which has diverted all the moisture. Now, conditions in Maharashtra are becoming favourable again for further advancement of monsoon between June 18 and 21,” said Sushma Nair, a scientist from IMD, Mumbai.
Meanwhile, Mumbai continued to receive light and moderate spells of rain till Wednesday evening. The IMD’s Santa Cruze observatory recorded 6mm rain while 10 mm was recorded in the Colaba observatory.
Dahanu received 43mm of rain, Mahabaleshwar 29mm and Harnai 21mm till Wednesday morning.
Currently, the cyclone is moving northwards towards Kutch and Gujarat and may further cross the Mandvi coast in Gujarat and Karachi coast in Pakistan.
