Modi not our enemy, says Uddhav as he takes a dig at PM’s visits to state

Taking a potshot at Modi, Thackeray said the PM’s recent visits to Maharashtra are more about inspecting what can be taken to Gujarat from the state.

Shiv Sena (UBT) president and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said that he was never an enemy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi before and is not his enemy even today, and it was him who decided to snap ties with the Sena. Taking a potshot at Modi, Thackeray said the PM’s recent visits to Maharashtra are more about inspecting what can be taken to Gujarat from here.

“I want to tell Modiji that we were never your enemy. Even today, we are not enemies. We were with you. The Shiv Sena was with you. We campaigned for our alliance last time. You became Prime Minister because our MPs like Vinayak Raut were elected. But later you distanced us from yourself. Our Hindutva and saffron flag stands even today. But today, the BJP is trying to tear that saffron flag,” said Thackeray.

He was addressing a public rally at Sawantwadi. Thackeray is on a Konkan tour and visiting Lok Sabha constituencies which are likely to be contested by his party.

While reminding Modi that it was the BJP which snapped ties with the Sena, Thackeray said that unlike any other election the upcoming 2024 general election is the most important ever. “Every year we greet each other on Republic Day. I am scared that if the ‘rakshas’ (demons) who are sitting in power are re-elected then the next Republic Day will never dawn upon us. It will be a Dictator’s Day,” said Thackeray.

Appealing to his workers to remain united ahead of the upcoming polls, Thackeray said, “Those who troubled us, will be taught a lesson so hard that the next generation will not even remember their names.”

Thackeray also attacked Modi over his Maharashtra visits, saying after the PM’s last visit to Konkan, a submarine project from Sindhudurg went to Gujarat. “He (Modi) has been coming frequently to Maharashtra. I fear, wherever he comes, he will take something from that place to Gujarat,” said Thackeray, asking whether Maharashtra needs such a PM.

Thackeray said the BJP lost its own identity while bringing others into their party, and that his party stands where it was earlier. “Today Muslims are coming with us, because they have realised that our Hindutva is not about lighting a fire within religions. Our Hindutva is about lighting a stove in a kitchen while your (BJP’s) Hindutva is about burning down a house,” he said.
