The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to construct a ‘Bhim Theme Park’ in honour of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar in Dharavi.
The MMRDA is looking for a consultant to prepare a feasibility project report for the proposed theme park. An official said, “Once the consultant is appointed, a proper detailed project report will be available based on which tenders will be called.”
The location identified for the park is near Mahim station on an open land parcel, a part of which is currently being used to run a BMC clinic.
The park is the brainchild of Mumbai Congress president and Dharavi legislator Varsha Gaikwad.
“This theme park will be developed with an objective to value constitutional rights and spread a word about it among the younger generation. I proposed a research centre, a digital library having books on the Constitution, a place where students can come, read and do research, senior citizens can also have a place of reading, a garden among others. The land parcel is huge in size which can be utilised for the larger interest of people,” Gaikwad said.
Gaikwad said that she managed to get funding from the social welfare ministry for this project of Rs 14 crore in 2020. However, due to a change in government the project was postponed. After going to the High Court, MMRDA has now called tenders for appointment of consultants.
The MMRDA official said that the identified land parcel on which the Bhim Park is proposed belongs to the BMC and if everything goes as per the plan they will put a proposal for transfer of land in the coming days.
