The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) completed the first phase of the construction of Bal Thackeray memorial at the Shivaji Park, officials said Wednesday.
In the first phase, the Mayor’s Residence at Dadar, which was taken over for the project, has been preserved and converted into a museum.
In addition, the construction of the entrance building, administrative building, and interpretation center has also been completed.
The interpretation centre, with an area of approximately 1,530.44 sqm, has an art gallery, library and toilets.
Sources said that official date for opening the memorial to public will be decided by the Thackeray Smarak Trust.
The earlier deadline for completion of phase 1 was May 2022.
MMRDA had appointed M/s Abha Narain Lambah Associates as the consultant and Tata Projects Ltd as the contractor for the first phase of the project, which costs Rs 180.99 crore
The second phase involves equipping the memorial with modern technology — laser shows, digital mapping projections, storytelling, films, virtual reality, audio visual and technical components.
Various photographs depicting the journey of the Shiv Sena founder will be displayed at the Mayor’s Residence building.
The consultant Lamba Associates has been appointed for the work of Phase 2 of the project, and the process of appointing a contractor is in progress, MMRDA officials said.
