Days after former Mumbai Congress leader Baba Siddique quit the party to join ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Ajit Pawar, his son and Bandra East MLA Zeeshan Siddique on Wednesday was removed as Mumbai Youth Congress chief.

In a statement issued by Srinivas BV, president of Indian Youth Congress, former national secretary of the organisation Akhilesh Yadav was announced as new chief of the Mumbai unit of the party’s youth wing.

Along with Yadav, Sufiyan Mohsin Haider was made the working president of the Mumbai Youth Congress.

By appointing Yadav, who hails from Versova in the western suburbs of Mumbai, the party has tried to put forward a North Indian face in its Mumbai unit.

Miffed over the move, Zeeshan Siddique vented out on social media website X, “88,517 mumbai youth congress members voted for me to become the president of mumbai youth congress which has been the highest number in the history of mumbai youth congress. This isn’t a nominated post I have got from lobbying or being a yes man to leaders, I have been ELECTED with the highest margin in the election process. After giving 12 years to the organisation having fought three elections it is unfortunate that I have not received any official intimation from the party and I have to learn about my ousting from media and social media. I am answerable to 88,517 who voted for me and I will be addressing a press conference about this very soon!”

New president Yadav has largely worked in Delhi as the national secretary of the organisation. “We had no clue that the decision was made. It was clear after Baba Siddique’s exit and statement from Zeeshan that there will be some action from the party. It is good that a swift and strong decision was taken without any fear,” said a senior leader from Mumbai Congress.

The leader added that the party organisation has sent a strong signal to all those who are taking party for granted that they are not irreplaceable. “Party is supreme and discipline must be maintained. If you cannot, then the post will not be with you,” said the leader.

When contacted, Yadav said that he was excited over giving such a huge responsibility and his focus will be on strengthening the organisation. “I have worked in different positions in NSUI and Youth Congress on organisational side. I will be focusing on strengthening it in Mumbai,” he said.
