The Shiv Sena led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has nominated MLA Ravindra Waikar as its candidate from the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency.
Waikar, who was facing heat from the Enforcement Directorate (ED), had recently switched over from the Shiv Sena (UBT) to the Shiv Sena. He will take on Amol Kirtikar of the Shiv Sena (UBT). Waikar replaces sitting Shiv Sena MP Gajanan Kirtikar.
In October 2023, the ED had registered a money laundering case against Waikar in connection with the construction of a luxury hotel, claiming it was in violation of his agreement with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Waikar got a major reprieve in February after the BMC informed the Supreme Court that it was withdrawing its earlier order to revoke permission for Waikar’s hotel.
The decision had set the ground for the collapse of the ED’s case against him and Waikar’s defection from the Thackeray camp.
Mumbai will vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20.
