Residents of Thane’s Mira Road along with others approached the Bombay High Court on Thursday seeking registration of FIRs against Maharashtra BJP MLA Nitesh Rane, independent MLA Geeta Jain who supports BJP and Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh for making alleged hate speeches during and after the communal clashes in the Naya Nagar area of the district in January this year.

The five petitioners, including two victims of violence, claimed that they approached the Court as the police failed to register cases on their own despite Supreme Court directions in that regard.

The petitioners claimed that while the clashes continued, Rane along with local MLA Jain visited parts of Mira Road and threatened members of the minority community through their speeches. Rane also visited other suburbs including Govandi and Malwani and indulged in more hate speeches, the petitioners added.

Moreover, the plea alleged that T Raja Singh on February 25 made communal remarks during a rally in the Mira Road area.

The petitioners sought direction to police for registration of suo motu (on its own) FIRs against the three MLAs for offences punishable under Sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riots), 153A, 153B (promoting enmity between groups), 295A (defiling place of worship), 504 and 505 (statements breaking public peace, causing mischief) of the Indian Penal Code.
