A day ahead of Gandhi Jayanti, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and senior civic officials joined hundreds of citizens, artists and volunteers at Girgaum Chowpatty to participate in a massive ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ cleanliness campaign which the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out in as many as 178 locations in Mumbai on Sunday.

Following the clean-up drive, CM Shinde paid a surprise visit to Kurla’s SRA colony in a bid to carry out an inspection of the cleanliness of the internal roads. Taking note of the unsanitary conditions of the area, CM Shinde instructed civic officials to clean public toilets and washrooms at least five times a day.

Local residents also cleaned 178 spots including various beaches, markets, religious sites, railway stations and bus stops.

The ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign is an accelerated nationwide cleaning campaign that was launched to mobilise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
