The searches conducted by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch at the residences of the five policemen arrested last month for their alleged association with drug peddler Shashikala alias Baby Patankar have revealed that four of them own assets worth crores. Accused police inspector Gautam Gaikwad has emerged to be the richest and his six-room house is being evaluated at Rs 4 crore.
Senior police inspector Suhas Gokhale, police inspector Gautam Gaikwad, police sub inspector Sudhakar Sarang, assistant sub inspector Jyotiram Mane and head constable Yeshwant Parate were arrested by the Crime Branch on May 29 this year. After their arrest, the Crime Branch initiated searches of their offices and residences.

“Gaikwad owns a house in a plush building, in Thane, which has one sprawling flat per floor. The six-room house is worth at least Rs 4 crore in the current market. Even if he bought it ten years ago, there is still a question of how he was able to afford such a plush house with his salary. Mane, Parate and Sarang own houses in various areas of Mumbai and combined with their vehicles, their assets are worth between Rs 1 to Rs 2 crore each,” said a Crime Branch officer.
The officer added that a police team is currently going through documents found in the houses of the four accused to find out details about their bank accounts.
The Crime Branch has also found that all the four accused own a house each in their respective native places. The police are working to find out if the properties are ancestral or have been bought by the accused after they joined service. The Crime Branch will then calculate the final value of their assets.
“If we are to attach the assets under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, we will need evidence to prove that the assets were bought using proceeds of the drug racket. In absence of such evidence, we will send a report of our investigations to the Anti Corruption Bureau, recommending an inquiry of disproportionate assets,” another officer said.
Sources said that all the five policemen have been interrogated repeatedly since their arrest but have all stuck to denying any connection with Patankar.
