Marathwada: Drinking water priority, not breweries, says Maharashtra govt

The state government on Sunday said there was no question of compromising on drinking water for people in the drought-hit districts of Marathwada region and that the issue of supplying water to breweries was not a priority. The government also announced lifting restrictions on transportation of fodder from one district to another to ensure its sustained supply. On Sunday, the seventh train carrying drinking water from Miraj reached Latur.

Officials indicated that almost 20 per cent cut in water supply to industries had already been enforced.

On Sunday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited districts in Jalna, where a mass marriage for farmers’ families was organised. Almost 551 couples from different religions tied the knot in the presence of the chief minister and Cabinet ministers. In Beed, 40 couples were married.

Apart from the wedding sarees and safari suits to the brides and grooms, the BJP has decided to give them Rs 20,000 too. The government initiative on mass marriage followed farmers putting on hold their daughters’ and sons’ wedding due to the drought.

State BJP chief Raosaheb Danve said, “We have decided to ensure at least 11,000 mass marriage this year to reach out to all those needy farmers’ families.”

Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse, Education Minister Vinod Tawde and Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan were present at the ceremony in Beed and Jalna.
