Bhujbal’s position presented in OBC elgar rallies contradicted the one taken by Maratha social activist Manoj Jarange Patil who has been demanding Kunbi certificates to Marathas. (Express photo) The ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Tuesday sided with its cabinet minister and senior OBC leader Chhagan Bhujbal over his public statements contradicting government’s actions with regard to Maratha reservation.
“Bhujbal is a senior minister in the state cabinet. He knows the functioning of a cabinet. He is a straighforward speaker and he must have presented his side inside the cabinet as well. However, whenever a leader faces the society on various issues, he has to present his side publicly,” said Ajit Pawar group NCP state president Sunil Tatkare.
Bhujbal had demanded a stay on the Kunbi (OBC) certificates being given to Marathas over the past two months and the scrapping of the Justice (retired) Sandeep Shinde Committee formed to explore ways to provide reservations to the Maratha community. He even asked the Backward Class Commission (BCC) not to survey the Maratha community alone to prove its social backwardness but instead study the backwardness of all communities and compare it with the Marathas.
Bhujbal’s position presented in OBC elgar rallies contradicted the one taken by Maratha social activist Manoj Jarange Patil who has been demanding Kunbi certificates to Marathas.
While Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena had expressed displeasure over Bhujbal’s public statements, his party seems to be supporting him. “Cabinet and topics discussed is one part but he also has a right to present his side about happenings outside the cabinet,” said Tatkare.
Tatkare reiterated that his party supports reservation to Marathas, which will survive the test of law. “While extending reservation to Marathas, the reservation for OBCs should not be reduced,” he said.
