Manoj Jarange Patil Maratha Reservation Protest Highlights: Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil Sunday continued his indefinite hunger strike for the third consecutive day after talks with the Maharashtra government remained inconclusive on Saturday. The Mumbai police has extended the permission for Patil’s agitation at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai by one more day, marking the second time in two days that they extended permission. The Maratha activists have demanded 10 per cent reservation and quota benefits for the Maratha community under the Other Backward Classes (OBC), with Patil vowing not to withdraw the agitation until their demands, including granting Kunbi status to Marathas, are met.

A day earlier, Patil told the Cabinet sub-committee, headed by Radhakrishnan Vikhe-Patil, that the state government must immediately give a report that Marathas of Marathwada are Kunbi, issue a Government Resolution on the same, and should start the distribution of Kunbi certificates from tomorrow itself. He also demanded the withdrawal of all cases against Maratha protestors on Saturday.

Meanwhile, NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar suggested bringing an amendment to the Constitution to find a lasting solution to the ongoing Maratha reservation issue in Maharashtra. Justifying reservation for the Maratha community, Pawar said, “Marathas are essentially dependent on agriculture and farming. With shrinking agriculture land holdings and financial distress, it has compounded problems for the Marathas. To secure their lives they are seeking reservation.”

On its part, the cabinet sub-committee is also working and finding ways to resolve the matter.

Social activist Manoj Jarange Sunday asserted he will not leave Mumbai until his demand for reservation to the Maratha community is met, as his hunger strike entered the third day, news agency PTI reported.

He also claimed his demand was constitutionally valid and that the government has records showing Kunbis and Marathas are the same caste.

Jarange said people from the Maratha community have come to Mumbai to participate in the agitation with a lot of pain in their hearts and urged Maharashtra government not to consider them as a "crowd".

"From tomorrow, I will stop taking water as the government is not accepting the demands. But I am not going back till the quota demand is met. We will get Marathas reservation under the OBC category no matter what," Jarange asserted.

"Our demand is constitutionally valid. The government has records of 58 lakh Marathas as Kunbis. Marathas will come to Mumbai (for the agitation) as and when they get time," he said.

Jarange asked his supporters to keep their vehicles at designated parking slots and come to Azad Maidan by train.

The activist said food, from supply trucks, should be distributed to the protesters at Vashi, Chembur, Sewri, Masjid Bunder and other places wherever they are parking their vehicles and they should then come to Azad Maidan. He also said his supporters should not pay money to those distributing umbrellas and raincoats to them, as per the PTI report. (PTI)

Mumbai Maratha Quota Protest LIVE: 'Constitutional amendment needed to resolve quota issues,' Sharad Pawar on Maratha reservation

Amid a renewed Maratha quota agitation in Mumbai, NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar on Saturday said a constitutional amendment was necessary to resolve these issues, as there is a ceiling on overall reservations.

He has been holding discussions with other MPs about the need for a constitutional amendment, Pawar said, speaking at a function here.

The Supreme Court has imposed a 52 per cent cap on reservations, but the court ratified 72 percent quota in Tamil Nadu, Pawar pointed out.

The Centre's role has to be transparent and clear in this issue, he said, adding that the country requires a uniform policy to ensure there was no bitterness in society. (PTI)

Mumbai Maratha Quota Protest LIVE: 'Pay heed to demands of Maratha community': Manoj Jarange Patil appeals to Maha CM Fadnavis

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil asked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to pay heed to the demands of the Maratha community. "Fadnavis saheb, this is your opportunity to win the hearts of Marathas," he said.

“I have finally reached here to sit on a hunger strike. We all gathered because initially, the government was not cooperating. Now that I am here and have begun my fast, you do not need to worry. Those who wish to return to their villages may do so in the evening—you don’t have to remain here. I am here now, and I will not back out until the Marathas get reservations. This is my word to you. Even if the government shoots me down or puts me in jail, I will not withdraw until our demands are met,” he added.

Mumbai Maratha Quota Protest LIVE: With Manoj Jarange Patil back on Mahayuti’s doorstep, why BJP is being cautious

As the rest of the state soaks in the festivities during the 10-day Ganeshotsav, an all-too-familiar political problem is back to trouble the BJP in Maharashtra.

Jarange Patil, who has revived his quota agitation after lying low for almost nine months following the BJP-led Mahayuti’s decisive win in last year’s Assembly elections, ratcheted up his rhetoric Thursday, accusing the BJP-led government of trying to “fool the Maratha community” and claiming he will not look back, even if he has to “face bullets”.

The BJP’s concerns have been compounded by its ally Shiv Sena’s decision to stay out of this fight. Last year, following the reversals in the Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, the BJP had banked on Sena leader and then Chief Minister Shinde, who is a Maratha, to counter Jarange Patil and bring back the Maratha votes it was seen as having lost during the parliamentary polls. Even when Jarange-Patil faced flak earlier this week for using derogatory language about Devendra Fadnavis and his mother — he later retracted the statement — neither Shinde nor the Sena came to the CM’s defence. Sena insiders said party MLAs, MPs, and other leaders had been directed not to speak against Jarange Patil as the party does not want to antagonise him.

Maratha Quota Protest LIVE: Jarange tells CM to show commitment to Marathas, govt says willing for talks

As Manoj Jarange Patil is set to hold a protest at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan today, the Maratha quota activist urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to “show his commitment to Marathas through his actions”.

Patil said if the state government agrees to their demands, they will withdraw agitation. “But you have to be sincere… or else, the Marathas will show their power to both the state and centre governments,” he said.

“I am going for an indefinite demonstration. I will sit on a hunger strike until all our demands including reservation within the OBC quota are accepted by the Fadnavis government… This is also a time for Fadnavis to show his commitment to Marathas through his action,” he added.

Among Patil’s demands is quota for Marathas under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

In an appeal to Fadnavis, he added, “You have a chance to win the hearts of the Marathas. Please change your stand. There is a big opportunity. We are ready for talks. We are coming.”

Maratha Quota Protest LIVE: Jarange-Patil says govt fooling Maratha community

The tussle between Maratha groups led by Manoj Jarange-Patil and the Mahayuti-led Maharashtra government is set to intensify as the Maratha leader said on Thursday the state government was making a mockery of the community by allowing only a day’s protest at Azad Maidan in Mumbai in support of their demand for reservation.

On way to Mumbai via Shivneri, Jarange-Patil said, “The state government has powers to give permission for the agitation but it gave only a day’s permission. This is fooling the Maratha community. The community should now learn from this.”

Though he has accepted the conditions laid down by the police to hold the agitation at Azad Maidan he expressed displeasure over it.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde worked to meet the demands of the Maratha community without disturbing the reservation for other communities, which no other government in the past had done. “Everyone has the right to protest in a democracy,” he said, adding that the state government will resolve issues of Maratha and OBC communities.
