Man who jumped off Sea Link was from Byculla: Cops

The police said that Madhar worked at a hotel in Colaba, hailed a taxi from his home and went to Sea Link

The man who allegedly jumped off the Bandra Worli Sea Link on Saturday has been identified as a 23-year-old Byculla resident. The police are yet to ascertain a motive for the alleged suicide bid, the first at the sea link this year.

The police identified the man as Akshay Madhar, of Hansraj Lane in Byculla West. Madhar worked at a hotel in Colaba, police said. Madhar’s family registered a missing person’s report on Saturday after he did not return home all night, police said. “The family has told us that Madhar left home around 2.30 am on Saturday morning without telling anyone. When he did not come back home hours later, his worried family approached the police,” said senior inspector Vijay Kulkarni, Worli police station.

The police said that Madhar hailed a taxi from his home and went to Bandra Worli Sea Link. Once on the sea link, he asked the taxi driver to stop, telling him that he had dropped his cap. He stepped out to fetch it, but once seated in the car, he began to vomit. The police said that Madhar got out of the car again and walked towards the railing. However, he jumped off the railing and into the water below.

Later on Saturday, the police examined reports of missing persons registered in the city and narrowed in on the one filed by Madhar’s family, corroborating it with the taxi driver’s statement, who said he had picked up the passenger from Byculla.

“We then called in Madhar’s friend Deepak Rathod to help identify the man showing jumping into the sea in the sea link’s CCTV footage. Rathod identified the man as Madhar. We do not know the reason for Madhar’s actions,” Kulkarni said.

Operations were under way to recover Madhar’s body, Kulkarni said.
