The Sir JJ Marg police on Monday arrested a 25-year-old man who escaped custody of the Customs department while at Sir JJ hospital around 10 days ago.

The accused, Shawez Nawaz, had allegedly swallowed eight gold capsules (likely in wax form) to smuggle them into the country from Saudi Arabia, but was caught at the airport by the Customs department on October 27.

After he fled custody of the Customs department, an FIR under Section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against Nawaz , and police began searching for him. He was nabbed from his home in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur by the police and handed back to the Customs officials.

“When we arrested him and questioned him, he claimed that after escaping from Customs custody in Mumbai, he took a train to Uttar Pradesh. He said that when he went to attend to nature’s call in the train toilet, he saw the capsules in his feces and couldn’t recover them,” a police officer said. Police found no gold in his possession.

Meanwhile, Customs officials suspect he cooked up the story. A source in the Customs department said, “We suspect he handed over the gold to his handler Asim, who had sent him abroad for the smuggling task.”

Nawaz’s lawyer Prabhakar Tripathi said, “The police and customs department are making false allegations, and no gold or any other contraband has been seized from Nawaz. We are soon going to apply for his bail.”

Shawez Nawaz was caught on suspicion by Customs officials at Terminal 2, when he arrived from Jeddah by flight number 6E62. With the court’s permission, Customs officials took him to Sir JJ Hospital to recover the smuggled gold from his tummy. On October 28, during medical examinations, when a customs officer went to the washroom, Nawaz escaped from the hospital.
