A 34-year-old man was killed in Mumbai’s Malad after a group of around six men allegedly attacked him with knives and smashed 12 beer bottles on his head Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Kalpesh Bhanushali, who lived in Malad and ran a fast food shop along with his family. The Malad police said the murder occurred between 1.30 am and 2.30 am outside Gurukrupa Bar and Restaurant, where Bhanushali had gone to collect a food parcel. The police filed a murder case at the Malad police station, arrested one of the accused and launched a manhunt to track down the others.
“The accused have been identified, and some of them have previous criminal records. Police teams are being formed to trace them,” said Sandip Jadhav, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 11.
The police said Bhanushali had an argument with the hotel manager and was abusing him, when a group of around six people smoking at the hotel gate objected to him. The argument then turned out to be between Bhanushali and the group, according to the police.
“They abused each other, and the group left, threatening the victim to wait there and that they would come in a while and see him,” said a police officer.
“The accused came back in in a few minutes, along with more people, and started hitting the victim with bear bottles on his head. The accused carried knives, and they stabbed him multiple times in his abdomen and other parts of the body,” said Jadhav.
When the police learned about the incident, a patrolling van and beat marshal from the Malad police station arrived at the scene. They rushed him to the hospital, but the doctors declared him dead.
The victim’s brother Paresh Bhanushali said, “My brother knew the hotel manager; they were friends and frolicked together. But the accused who were smoking at the bar gate intentionally got involved, and it seems like they took revenge for some previous issue.”
“We sold a Ganesh idol to a person a few days ago, but he had not made the full payment. We had an argument with him and his friends,” said Paresh, who expressed his apprehension that the murder could be a fallout of the issue.
