The incident comes a month after the Western Railway introduced an initiative to equip TCs with body cameras. A 23-year-old man was arrested in Mumbai earlier this week for allegedly assaulting a ticket checker at Virar railway station on February 1, the Western Railway said in a statement.
Ticket checker Birju Singh Tanwar was allegedly attacked by a person who was caught travelling without a valid ticket. Subsequently, the Government Railway Police (GRP) on February 3 lodged a case against an unknown person under sections 121(2) (intentionally causing grievous hurt to a public servant) and 132 (use of criminal force or assault against a public servant while they are performing their duties) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
An RPF Crime Prevention and Detection Squad comprising Head Constable Kailash Jadhav and Constable Rakesh Tanwar was tasked with tracking the accused. Aditya Pawar, a resident of Virar East, was identified as the accused through CCTV analysis and facial recognition software.
Pawar was arrested at the Borivali railway premises on Tuesday, the Western Railway said. While being questioned by Senior Inspector Devendra Kumar, he allegedly admitted to assaulting Tanwar and was then handed over to the GRP for further action.
The incident comes a month after the Western Railway introduced an initiative to equip TCs with body cameras. The development followed a similar step by the Central Railways to purchase 50 body cameras last year.
