The teachers’ recruitment drive for government schools in Maharashtra, which was stalled as the Model Code of Conduct came into effect with the announcement on the Lok Sabha elections, will resume again district-wise, following approval from the Election Commission. Once the voting process concludes in a district, the recruitment drive for teachers will also resume.

In February, the Maharashtra school education department announced a massive teacher recruitment drive for a total of 21,678 posts in 1,258 schools, including those run by the Zilla Parishad, municipal corporations, city councils and private-run schools.

The state-wide process has already been started by the Commissionerate of school education through the Pavitra portal – a technology-based centralised platform for recruitment process to ensure transparency. But it was stalled after the Model Code of Conduct came into effect.

Commissioner of education Suraj Mandhare said, “We had approached the Election Commission to allow us to continue with the recruitment process. As per their instructions, the process will soon resume.”

According to the notification issued on Pavitra portal, the Election Commission, via a letter dated April 19, has allowed the school education department to resume the teacher recruitment drive in districts, once the voting process is over.

This, according to the education department, will speed up the recruitment process as they do not have to wait for the entire election process to be over. “The recruitment process can be completed before schools reopen on June 15 for the next academic year,” said an official from the school education department.

Welcoming the move, Santosh Magar, founding president of the D. T. Ed. B.Ed. Students Association, an organisation of qualified teachers who are waiting for appointment, said, “Even if the recruitment process is speeded up, aspirants will have to wait until June to finally have a job in hand. But as the recruitment process will start district-wise soon after voting, students will have new teachers in schools from Day one of the new academic year.”
