The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Thane on Saturday registered an FIR against a group of men who allegedly assaulted a 72-year-old man in a Mumbai-bound express train after accusing him of carrying beef. The man was carrying buffalo meat, which is not banned, the police said after a preliminary probe.

The incident took place on August 28 on the Dhule-CSMT Express. The Jalgaon-based senior citizen was travelling alone to visit his daughter in Kalyan when a group of men fought with him over a seat after the train left Nashik Road railway station and before it reached Igatpuri, the police said.

The men allegedly assaulted the senior citizen after accusing him of illegally carrying beef. They kicked him, abused him, and recorded a video of the assault and shared it on social media where it became viral, the police said.

The accused did not allow the senior citizen to alight at Kalyan railway station. At Thane, after all of them got off the train and left, the senior citizen made his way to his daughter’s place in Kalyan.

After the video went viral, the railway police took serious cognisance of the matter and sent a team to locate the elderly person who did not file a complaint.

A police team then visited his place and convinced him to file a complaint, following which his statement was recorded and an FIR was lodged, a GRP officer said.

“Three suspects have been detained in Dhule and are being brought to Thane where they will be formally arrested after their roles in the incident are established. They will be produced in court tomorrow,” said Archana Dusane, senior inspector of Thane GRP.

It is suspected that the accused youths were coming to Mumbai-Thane from Dhule for police recruitment.

The accused have been booked under sections 189(2) (unlawful assembly), 191(2) (rioting), 190 (unlawful assembly in prosecution of common object), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 115(2) (causing hurt), 324(4)(5) (mischief causing loss or damage), 351(2)(3)(criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The police are looking for the other accused with the help of CCTV footage and viral videos. They also rubbished reports that the elderly person had died by suicide.
