Maharashtra will provide two new sets of uniforms to all students in government-run schools from academic year 2024-’25.

The new uniforms will be light blue shirts and dark blue half pants/full-pants for boys and light blue shirt/kameez and dark blue skirt/salwar for girls. Uniforms will also be provided for the Scouts and Guides with shoulder stripes and pockets on both sides.

The school education department issued a Government Resolution (GR) on Wednesday evening stating that the Maharashtra Prathamik Shikshan Parishad (MPSP) will be responsible to provide these uniforms which will be applicable for students studying in classes 1 to 8, in all government-run schools. Even as the tendering process and procurement will be the responsibility of MPSP, stitching of the uniforms will be done by women’s self-help groups.

The state’s school education department in April this year took the decision of a new standardised uniform for all students in government-run schools. But before this was finalised, uniforms decided by the School Management Committees (SMC) were ready to be distributed as per the prevalent practice.

This led to a new announcement by the government that the SMC will provide one set of uniforms and the state will provide another, which will be used for Scouts and Guides. However, the latter, too, was eventually provided by the SMC as there were delays in the tendering and procurement process which meant the students would have to continue the academic year with a single set of uniforms. Thus it was decided that the state will provide uniforms from the next academic year.
