While the Mahayuti government's overall performance is well above average, the lack of internal coordination among the ministries has become publicIn one of the first administrative rejigs in Maharashtra after he was sworn in, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has appointed Rameshwar Naik as the in-charge of Chief Minister Medical Assistance Cell, replacing Mangesh Chivate, a close aide of former CM and current deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
Along with the administrative changes, the government has also decided to merge a medical cell working to ensure beds for poor patients at charitable hospitals run by trusts — which in the previous government was under then Deputy CM Fadnavis — with the CM Medical Assistance Cell. Naik was in-charge of the cell under Fadnavis in the previous government.
“My task will be to make the CM Medical Assistance Cell as people friendly as possible and to ensure that as many people benefit from this,” Naik said.
When Shinde was CM, the CM Medical Assistance Cell was well-publicised and its in-charge Chivate also gained publicity across the state. The work done under the cell played a major role in shaping the image of Shinde as a “caring administrator who large-heartedly works for the poor and needy patients”.
According to sources, in the past two and half years, the CM Medical Assistance Cell distributed Rs 381 crore medical aid for 51,000 patients and Rs 38 crore has been spent for natural calamities.
Chivate was not limited to the cell’s work. He was also sent to negotiate with Maratha social activist Manoj Jarange-Patil several times.
