The Maharashtra government has decided to include beneficiaries of the CM Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme under the CM Annapurna Scheme, in which three free cylinders will be given to families living below poverty line.
In a budget presented by Maharashtra’s Finance minister Ajit Pawar in June 2024, the state government had announced the CM Annapurna scheme, under which 52.16 lakh beneficiaries of the PM Ujjwala scheme were inititally chosen to get three free cylinders. The state would pay an amount of Rs 530 per cylinder directly to these beneficiaries’ bank accounts. Under the Ujjwala scheme, the beneficiaries already get a subsity of Rs 300 per cylinder, which normally costs around Rs 830.
However, the state cabinet witnessed disagreements over the list of beneficiaries under the Ujjwala scheme only being used, where they would receive three free cylinders in a year.
“It was argued that using the list of beneficiaries from the Ujjwala scheme would not give the state government any credit for the Annapurna scheme and instead the Centre will take all the fame,” a senior official privy to the discussions said.
As a result, the state government has now decided to include beneficiaries of CM Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme – where Rs 1,500 a month will be transferred into the accounts of women with families that have an income of less that Rs 2.5 lakh per annum – as well into this. The total number of beneficiaries is likely to increase to at least one crore after the decision.
The government has formed committees to scrutinise the applications for the scheme and only one cylinder per family (as per the ration card entries) can be given. In a year, only three cylinders can be given under this scheme.
The beneficiaries however will have to purchase the cylinder from oil companies and after that the state government will reimburse the money directly into their accounts. In case of beneficiaries from the CM Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme, the government will reimburse the entire amount of Rs 830 to beneficiaries.
