In the wake of attacks on staff of state-run buses on the Karnataka border, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said on Tuesday that the state would consider deploying security personnel on the state transport corporation buses travelling to Karnataka.
“As the transport minister, I have to think about the security of our passengers. If there are some anti-social elements, then we need to think about deploying security marshals or police personnel on our state-run buses that go to Karnataka,” Sarnaik said.
Bus services between Maharashtra and Karnataka were suspended by both governments after two attacks on bus staff from both states apparently over linguistic disputes. The incidents have led to tensions in the border areas, with reports of buses being stopped and drivers facing harassment.
Sarnaik emphasised that passengers should not suffer due to the suspension of bus services. He said senior officials from Maharashtra’s transport department were in discussions with their Karnataka counterparts to resolve the issue.
“Marathi is our pride, and we need to look after the security of our passengers. The issue will also be discussed in the state cabinet meeting,” he added.
The minister said the state would not tolerate any harassment of its people. “Maharashtra has its pride, and we will not tolerate if people of the neighbouring state bully our people,” he added.
While tensions still persist, efforts are being made from both sides to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of passengers travelling between the two states.
