The state government has decided to bar candidates, who produce fake caste certificates, or no certificates when contesting from reserved seats for elections to civic bodies, from contesting polls for six years.

To implement this, the State Wednesday decided to amend the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act 1888, Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and Maharashtra Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and Industrial Townships Act, 1965.
It is mandatory for all candidates contesting from reserved seats to produce caste certificates. However, in April 2015 the government had decided to allow candidates to contest without first submitting a caste certificate on the condition that they present it within six months of polls.
