The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday approved the recruitment of around 15,000 police personnel in the state police force. The decision follows the announcement by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also heads the Home Department, during the monsoon session of the Assembly that a recruitment drive for the police department is underway.

This recruitment will be done after reviewing the posts vacant in the state police force during the year 2024 and those falling vacant in 2025. The number of posts to be filled is as follows: Police Constable – 10,9008, Police Constable Driver – 234, Bandsman – 25, Armed Police Constable – 2,393, Prison Constable – 554. These posts of Police Constable and Prison Constable are in Group – C cadre.
The initiative is part of a 150-day programme aimed at restructuring the police department, updating rules, ensuring compassionate appointments, and identifying vacancies. CM Fadnavis had said that the state government has already recruited 38,802 police personnel between 2022 and 2025, and a proposal for recruiting an additional 13,560 police posts has also been submitted.

The Cabinet also cleared the decision to increase the margins ration shopkeepers receive in the state.

Minister of Food and Civil Supplies Chhagan Bhujbal said that the Cabinet gave approval to increase the margin amount for ration shopkeepers who provide food grain to eligible beneficiaries of the National Food Security Scheme (Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Households) under the state’s public distribution system.

Bhujbal said, “The margin rate currently being given to the fair price shopkeepers for distribution of food grains to ration card holders through e-POS machines under the public distribution system in the state has been increased by Rs 20 per quintal (Rs 200 per metric tonne). This will result in an estimated annual additional financial burden of Rs 92.71 crore on the State Exchequer.”
