Lok Sabha elections: MVA finalises seat-sharing in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (UBT) to contest 21 seats, Cong 17, NCP-SP 10

The Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders said on Tuesday that there are no differences among the coalition partners over any Lok Sabha seat and that they would ‘work together’ to defeat the BJP.

After days of wrangling and several rounds of talks to break the deadlock among the alliance partners over several Lok Sabha seats, including Sangli and Bhiwandi, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra on Tuesday announced its seat-sharing arrangement for the Lok Sabha elections — the Shiv Sena (UBT) will contest 21 out of the 48 seats in the state, Congress 17 and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) 10.

At a joint press conference in Mumbai where they announced the seat-sharing arrangement, the MVA leaders insisted there were no disagreements. “There is no difference on any seat… be it Sangli or any other. All decisions have been taken unanimously,” NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar said.

In the seat-sharing arrangement, the Congress gave up two seats — it was eyeing — to the Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP).

The Sangli seat, which had created a rift between the Congress and Sena (UBT), will be contested by the latter. Chandrahar Patil, a wrestler who belongs to the Sena (UBT), will contest from the seat as the MVA candidate, taking on BJP’s siting MP Sanjaykaka Patil.

The Congress has also given up the Bhiwandi seat, which will be contested by NCP (SP) candidate Suresh Mhatre.

The Sena (UBT) and Congress were at loggerheads after the former had announced the candidature of Patil for Sangli and Anil Desai for Mumbai South Central. The Congress had staked claim to both seats. Additionally, Congress leaders were irked after the NCP (SP) announced the candidature of Mhatre for Bhiwandi.

At Tuesday’s press conference, former Maharashtra chief minister and Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray said it was natural that discussions would go on till the end. “Ultimately, we have to close discussions somewhere and begin campaigning. There is no crime in having ambitions. However, ultimately we have to come together to win by deciding whom to defeat. We have started working together,” Uddhav said.

Saying that every party wants to contest on several seats, Uddhav said, “But when you set victory as your goal, you have to keep aside your ambitions. We have to keep in mind why we are contesting, for whom we are contesting and against whom we are contesting… Taking these factors into consideration, one has to step into the election ring and win the election. The Sena UBT has announced all candidates on 21 seats it will be contesting. The Congress and NCP will announce their candidates in a couple of days.”

Uddhav said the Congress has come up with a good manifesto for the country. “When the INDIA bloc comes to power, it will implement the manifesto. In Maharashtra, we will add local issues to the manifesto and then release it,” he said.

Uddhav said the MVA tried to rope in the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) into its fold, but was not successful. “We had offered VBA some seats, but they were not acceptable to Prakash Ambedkar. We wanted VBA to join us, but that did not happen. We have full respect and admiration for Ambedkar,” he said.

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole also said that his party has begun the fight against “the dictatorial government”. “Any dispute over seat-sharing is over. We have decided to work to defeat the Modi government and our workers will do the same. There is no dispute over Sangli and Bhiwandi. There will be no issue of vote transfers. Original Shiv Sena and NCP are with us and workers of three parties will work together,” he said.

In 31 years of his career, he has regularly written stories on a range of topics, primarily on civic issues like state of roads, choked drains, garbage problems, inadequate transport facilities and the like. He has also written aggressively on local gondaism. He has primarily written civic stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Khadki, Maval and some parts of Pune. He has also covered stories from Kolhapur, Satara, Solapur, Sangli, Ahmednagar and Latur. He has had maximum impact stories from Pimpri-Chinchwad industrial city which he has covered extensively for the last three decades.   Manoj More has written over 20,000 stories. 10,000 of which are byline stories. Most of the stories pertain to civic issues and political ones. The biggest achievement of his career is getting a nearly two kilometre road done on Pune-Mumbai highway in Khadki in 2006. He wrote stories on the state of roads since 1997. In 10 years, nearly 200 two-wheeler riders had died in accidents due to the pathetic state of the road. The local cantonment board could not get the road redone as it lacked funds. The then PMC commissioner Pravin Pardeshi took the initiative, went out of his way and made the Khadki road by spending Rs 23 crore from JNNURM Funds. In the next 10 years after the road was made by the PMC, less than 10 citizens had died, effectively saving more than 100 lives. Manoj More's campaign against tree cutting on Pune-Mumbai highway in 1999 and Pune-Nashik highway in 2004 saved 2000 trees. During Covid, over 50 doctors were  asked to pay Rs 30 lakh each for getting a job with PCMC. The PCMC administration alerted Manoj More who did a story on the subject, asking then corporators how much money they demanded....The story worked as doctors got the job without paying a single paisa. Manoj More has also covered the "Latur drought" situation in 2015 when a "Latur water train" created quite a buzz in Maharashtra. He also covered the Malin tragedy where over 150 villagers had died.     Manoj More is on Facebook with 4.9k followers (Manoj More), on twitter manojmore91982 ... Read More
